Safety and Support

Iowa State is dedicated to providing a safe campus for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Choosing an employer is a major decision for most individuals, and in addition to benefits, geography, and a positive culture, safety is a key factor in the decision-making process. Iowa State has several resources focused on campus safety including, but not limited to Department of Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and supportive benefits options.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) consists of the Iowa State Police Department, Parking Division, and Risk Management and provides multiple programs to enhance the safety and security of Iowa State, including 24/7 emergency and non-emergency phone response, Iowa State Alerts (emergency notifications), SafeRide & HelpVan, and community outreach. Additionally, the Iowa State Police Department, in coordination with multiple university entities and local law enforcement agencies, is responsible for completing the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, which is shared with all students and employees each year. Printed copies may be requested by visiting the Iowa State Police Department at Room 55, Armory Building or calling 515-294-4428.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) works to minimize dangers and provide information to encourage a safe environment for all students, staff, and faculty. EHS is responsible for several campus safety initiatives, including administering and coordinating building emergency maps and contacts, accident reporting, personal protective equipment (PPE), weather emergency communication and planning, and lab and research safety.

In addition to these campus resources, Iowa State has additional options available to directly support personal safety and mental health. Please refer to our Employee Benefits webpage for additional information.
